Is Gili Trawangan Worth Visiting on a Bali Trip? (2026)

When I went to Bali, I wondered: is Gili Trawangan worth visiting? It has a reputation as a party island but I wasn’t sure what to expect. In the end, I liked the beaches and the vibe so much, I returned a year later. Here’s my complete guide to Gili T: what it’s like and how to plan a couple of days there.

Quick overview of Gili Trawangan

  • It’s the largest of the three Gili Islands, but still only around 3km by 2km
  • You can walk around the whole coast in a couple of hours or cycle it in an hour
  • You can reach it in 1.5 hours by boat from Bali’s Padangbai port or in 2-3 hours from southern Bali
  • No cars and no motorbikes are allowed anywhere on the island, only horse-drawn carts and bicycles
  • Two or three days is enough here, longer if you’re scuba diving
  • Stay near the main strip for lively evenings – the other side of the island is more peaceful

What Gili Trawangan is like

Gili Trawangan, also known as Gili T, is the largest of the three Gili Islands. The first time I went, I was travelling solo around Bali for a month. I visited Gili T as a side trip with two friends I met travelling. We were in Ubud, looking for somewhere to spend a fun long weekend. We’d heard Gili T’s reputation as a party island so we booked a boat there, which takes 1.5 hours.

One of the first things I noticed about Gili T was the white-sand beaches and the boats. What sets it apart from Bali is that it’s car-free. This means there’s no traffic noise or pollution, no clogged streets and no sense of rush.

The other thing is how small it is. It’s only 3km by 2km (just over two square miles total area). You can walk around the coast in a couple of hours or cycle around it in an hour. The area by the main strip is lively with bars and restaurants. The other side of the island is much calmer.

My days on Gili Trawangan started with complimentary breakfast at the accommodation. Then it’s mostly about relaxing on the beach, doing some kind of activity, then dinner and drinks in the evening. Gili T is known for the parties at its beach bars near the port.

A couple of days is usually enough to get acquainted with the island. Afterwards you can explore the other Gili Islands, go to nearby Lombok or return to Bali. I liked Gili Trawangan so much that I returned when I went back to Bali a year later.

How to get to the Gili Islands from Bali

The only way to get to the Gilis from Bali is by boat. I’ve done this journey twice, from two different ports in Bali. The first time was from Padangbai in East Bali, which is the main route. The second time I caught a fast boat from Amed in the north. It’s a lot quicker from there, but sadly this port is now closed until further notice.

When I travelled from Padangbai, our ticket included a shuttle pick-up service from our accommodation in Ubud. This is super convenient, though it’s an early start as they pick you up at 8.30am. The easiest way is to book your tickets online. It costs €32 with a hotel shuttle and €25 if you don’t need the pick-up. Boats leave Padangbai at 8.20am, 9am and 1.50pm – it’s better to go in the morning to avoid the crowds. Return boats from Gili T leave at 10am and 3.30pm.

If you’re staying in Kuta, Seminyak or Canggu, you can get to Gili T from the southern ports of Serangan, Sanur and Nusa Dua. Those crossings take 2 to 3 hours and cost from around €25.

Whichever route you take, bring cash for the harbour fees. You’ll need around 50,000 IDR per person each way.

If you have a return ticket, keep all parts of your tickets and note the boat company named on it. Visit the company’s ticket office at least two days before you depart Gili T, to make sure you have a seat on your preferred date, as they get booked up quickly.

Book your boat tickets from Padangbai to Gili Trawangan online including hotel pick-up here.

Where to stay on Gili Trawangan

If you prefer lively evenings and convenience, stay near the main beach at Gili Trawangan. This means you’re close to the night market, bars, restaurants and the main port for transportation.

The northern part of the island is quieter with excellent snorkelling spots nearby, ideal for people seeking peace. This area has seen several new relaxed hotels and beach club openings. Finally, the western side has the best sunsets and a growing number of beach bars.

To avoid hauling your bags around trying to find Gili Trawangan accommodation, like I did the first time, it’s best to book in advance.

The best Gili Trawangan hotels

We stayed in Rose Homestay, a small and comfortable guest house just off the main strip.

If you prefer somewhere quieter, head to Wilson’s Retreat in the north of the island, where you’ll be close to the best snorkelling spots.

Things to do on Gili Trawangan

Most things to do on Gili Trawangan involve the sea. Snorkelling and diving are the main ones, but there are plenty more. You can also cycle around the coast, paddleboard, kayak, take a surf lesson, go fishing and watch the sunset from the west coast.

Snorkelling and diving in Gili Trawangan

Snorkelling is best in places like Turtle Point in the north, where you can swim out from the beach and see turtles.

You can also book a snorkelling tour to the nearby island of Gili Meno to see underwater statues and visit a turtle sanctuary. Often they can take photos of you too.

If you’d rather not get in the water, book a glass-bottomed boat tour – it’s amazing at sunset.

If you’re keen to scuba dive in Gili T, but you’re not qualified yet, you can book a discovery dive. A word of warning though, I did one with some friends and it was super disappointing – we literally saw nothing and I asked for our money back. When it comes to scuba diving, in my experience the dive spots around Bali are far superior. For example, at Tulamben near Amed you can explore an actual shipwreck without having to dive too deep.

Book a trip to see Gili Meno’s cool underwater statues here.

Other things to do on Gili Trawangan

Cycling around the coast of Gili T is easy. The path is flat and the full loop takes about an hour. Bike hire is available all over the main strip.

Stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking suit the water here, which is flat and clear close to the shore. This sunrise tour is ideal for beginners and includes drone footage of your session. The warm, clear sea with gentle breaks is also perfect for learning to surf. Classes for beginners and intermediate level surfers can be booked online here.

If all that sounds too active, try this private all-inclusive fun fishing trip – no experience needed.

Aside from its party reputation, Gili Trawangan also has a wellness scene. Check out the yoga classes at Sunset Beach Yoga and heavenly massages at Pinkcoco Spa.

At sunset, why not head to the West Sunset Point and enjoy the view from one of the area’s beach bars. Nearby, you’ll find the famous Gili Trawangan swing, which is fantastic for sunset photos (see mine below). You’ll find it at Sunset Beach near Hotel Ombak Sunset.

Evenings on Gili Trawangan

The east of the island comes alive after sunset with restaurants and bars, live music performances and a late-night party schedule. The north and west of Gili T stays quiet after dark, with evenings revolving around dinner by the sea, a short walk and an early night.

There are many restaurants on Gili Trawangan to choose for dinner, mainly beachfront seafood and Mediterranean-style restaurants.

For a cheaper dinner option, check out the night market which sells traditional Indonesian street food dishes, such as nasi goreng (fried rice), sate ayam (chicken satay sticks) and curries.

My experience of the nightlife on Gili Trawangan

Near the main harbour, bars and beach parties can run late. We stayed here and loved the Sama-Sama Reggae Bar, which has a live band performing every evening and a friendly atmosphere.

For our last evening on Gili T, we thought it would be an excellent idea to go to the Full Moon party at the Surf Bar (sadly I think it doesn’t exist any more). It was a lot of fun – the DJs were great and fire dancers appeared from out of nowhere. We danced until the sun started peeking over the horizon.

But we suffered the consequences – after two hours’ sleep and suffering with hangovers, we had to check out, drag our heavy bags to the harbour and wait what seemed like hours for our boat back to Bali. What a night!

How to get around Gili Trawangan

As mentioned, there are no cars or motorbikes permitted on the island. Ways to get around include walking, cycling or hiring an electric bike.

Another option is by horse-drawn cart. This form of transport is known as the cidomo and it operates as the island’s taxi. Every crate of beer and sack of cement landing at the harbour is transported this way, so you’ll see the carts lined up at the jetty when your boat pulls in. Sadly, the horses used are not always treated well, which is why I personally avoided them.

The best time to visit Gili Trawangan

Gili Trawangan has a tropical climate with warm and humid weather year-round, but the amount of rainfall changes noticeably between seasons. The dry season runs from April to October. The best times to visit Gili Trawangan are in April-May or September-October when the conditions are good and accommodation prices are reasonable. Both times, I went in May and the weather was perfect.

Peak season is July and August, when European summer holidays bring the biggest crowds. Christmas and New Year is also busy and more expensive, as this is when many Indonesian tourists visit the island. The wet season is from November to March, with the heaviest rain from December to February.

Weekends are busier than midweek all year, as this is when most people day-trippers come over from Bali and Lombok.

Frequently asked questions about Gili Trawangan

What is Gili Trawangan famous for?

The island is known for being car-free and its reputation as a party island. It’s the largest and busiest of the three Gili Islands, and the only one with a real nightlife scene.

Is it worth visiting Gili Trawangan?

Yes, definitely, if you’re looking for somewhere you can relax during the day and enjoy the evenings. The beaches are better than many in Bali and the car-free environment gives this island a uniquely peaceful atmosphere.

Is Gili cheaper than Bali?

No, prices are much the same. You might notice that eating out is slightly more expensive than Bali as all the supplies need to arrive by boat, but I didn’t notice a big difference in what I paid for a room or a meal compared to Bali.

Is Gili T still a party island?

Yes, though it’s evolved. While Gili Trawangan still hosts beach parties most nights, the island has also developed a strong yoga and wellness scene. You can easily avoid the party scene by staying on the quieter western or northern sides. It’s now mature enough that you can curate whatever experience you want.

How can I get to Gili Trawangan from Bali?

By fast boat. Padang Bai on the east coast is the shortest crossing at around 1.5 hours, from about €25. The southern ports of Serangan, Sanur and Nusa Dua run 2 to 3 hours. There’s no airport on the Gilis, so a boat is the only way in.

Is Gili or Lombok better?

They’re different propositions rather than better or worse. Gili T is a small car-free island you can see in a couple of days. Lombok is much larger, with Mount Rinjani, surf beaches in the south and waterfalls inland, and it needs a week or more. I’ve only been to Gili T, so take that as orientation.

Should I go to Gili Trawangan, Gili Air or Gili Meno?

Gili T is the largest and busiest, with the most bars, restaurants and dive schools. Gili Air is the middle option, with a decent spread of places to stay and a slower pace. Gili Meno is the smallest and least developed, and tends to suit couples and anyone avoiding crowds. All three are car-free. I never made it to Air or Meno. Both times I was happy where I was and didn’t feel the pull to move, so take that as orientation rather than a verdict.

How do you get between the Gili Islands?

The public island hopper boat costs 25,000 IDR per person one way. Most fast boats from Bali can’t drop at Gili Meno, so you’d go via Gili T or Gili Air and take a local boat across.

What can you do on Gili Trawangan for free?

Walking the entire circumference of the island takes about two hours and costs nothing. Snorkelling from the beach is free if you bring your own equipment, and you can often spot turtles right off the shore near Turtle Point. Watching the sunset from the western beaches is spectacular and completely free.

How do you get around Gili Trawangan?

On foot, by bicycle or by electric bike. There are no cars or motorbikes. Horse-drawn carts operate as the island’s taxis, though most visitors won’t need one.

How many days do you need in Gili Trawangan?

I’d say 2-3 days is the sweet spot. That gives you enough time to try different activities, explore the beaches, and experience both the chill and party sides of the island. Though the laid-back vibe is so addictive you might end up staying longer.

Final thoughts about whether Gili Trawangan is worth visiting

The short answer is yes. It’s a fun island with no traffic, white-sand beaches and a laid-back vibe. I liked it so much I went back a year later.

What I like about Gili Trawangan is it can be calm or lively, social or quiet. Different types of travellers can easily coexist here. Backpackers, couples, yoga lovers and partygoers share the island easily, without it losing its character. And the island is small enough that you can enjoy its different sides without going too far.
