Is Gili Trawangan Worth Visiting on a Bali Trip? (2026)

Gili Trawangan has a reputation as a party island. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first went, as a side trip from Bali, but I liked the beaches and the vibe enough to return a year later. This guide outlines what spending 2–3 days here actually feels like and where to stay, so you can decide if it earns its place in your Bali itinerary.

Quick overview of Gili Trawangan

  • Most days are spent by the sea, swimming or resting on the beach
  • The whole island is car-free – you can explore on foot, by bicycle or on a horse-drawn cart
  • Evenings can be quiet or lively, depending on where you stay

Introduction to Gili Trawangan

Gili Trawangan, also known as Gili T, is the largest of the three Gili Islands, sitting off the coast of Lombok. It’s often visited as a short side trip from Bali. It’s a tiny island – small enough to walk or cycle in about an hour.

One of the things that sets Gili T apart from Bali is that it’s car-free. There’s no traffic noise, no exhaust fumes and no sense of rush.

That calm shifts in the evenings. While Gili Trawangan is known for the parties at its beach bars, other parts of the island remain quiet and low-key. This means where you stay makes a big difference to how the island feels.

In recent years, there’s been a visible effort to reduce plastic waste. Refill stations are spread across the island, so it’s easy to top up a reusable bottle rather than buying single-use plastics.

What 2–3 days on Gili Trawangan looks like

Most days on Gili Trawangan start without much of a plan: a swim or snorkel in the morning, a late breakfast, then long stretches of doing very little by the beach. That’s the beauty of this place. Getting around is easy and unhurried, and it doesn’t take long to settle in.

Some nights are quiet, revolving around a sunset dinner by the sea, while others are livelier if you’re in the busier parts of the island. After a couple of days, you’ve usually seen enough to feel satisfied – which is why Gili Trawangan works well as a short stop on a longer Bali trip.

Where to stay on Gili Trawangan

If you prefer lively evenings and convenience, stay near the main beach at Gili Trawangan. This means you’re close to the night market, bars, restaurants and the main port for transportation.

The northern part of the island is quieter with excellent snorkelling spots nearby, ideal for people seeking peace. This area has seen several new relaxed hotels and beach club openings. Finally, the western side has the best sunsets and a growing number of beach bars.

To avoid hauling your bags around trying to find Gili Trawangan accommodation, it’s best to book in advance.

The best Gili Trawangan hotels

We stayed in Rose Homestay, a small but comfortable guest house just off the main strip.

If you prefer somewhere quieter, head to Wilson’s Retreat in the north of the island, where you’ll be close to the best snorkelling spots.

Optional things to do on Gili Trawangan

You don’t need to plan much on Gili Trawangan, but there are a few easy activities that can add gentle structure to your days if you want it.

Snorkelling is the most obvious one. You can swim straight from the beach in many places, or join a short boat trip to see turtles and reef life nearby. The best spots are Turtle Point and Shark Point. If you stick around until evening, you can witness the sunset over the sea.

Cycling around the island is another low-effort way to spend time if you rent a bike. The coastal path is flat and easy, and a full loop doesn’t take long, making it something you can do without committing to a whole day.

If you’re already interested in diving, Gili Trawangan is a convenient place to do it, but other dive spots around Bali are better. In any case, it’s easy to skip – the island still works without adding anything more.

Evenings on Gili Trawangan

The island comes alive after sunset with a mix of dining and music that caters to every mood.

Some parts of Gili T stay quiet after dark, with evenings revolving around dinner by the sea, a short walk and an early night.

There are many restaurants on Gili Trawangan to choose for dinner. As well as beachfront seafood restaurants, you’ll find sociable venues playing live music.

For a cheaper dinner option, you can check out the night market which sells traditional Indonesian street food dishes, such as nasi goreng (fried rice), sate ayam (chicken satay sticks) and curries

My experience of the nightlife on Gili Trawangan

Near the main harbour, bars and beach parties can run late. We stayed here and loved the Sama-Sama Reggae Bar, which has a live band performing every evening and a friendly atmosphere.

For our last evening on Gili T, we thought it would be an excellent idea to go to the Full Moon party at the Surf Bar. It was a lot of fun – the DJs were great and fire dancers appeared from out of nowhere. We danced until the sun started peeking over the horizon.

But we suffered the consequences – after two hours’ sleep and suffering with hangovers, we had to check out, drag our heavy bags to the harbour and wait what seemed like hours for our boat back to Bali. What a night!

How to get to the Gili Islands from Bali

The Gili islands are 45 minutes in a fast boat from Amed on the north coast of Bali. This is the quickest and easiest route from Bali to Gili Trawangan.

You’ll arrive at the main port area, which has an attractive white sand beach. These days, long boats fight for space along this strip, as an increasing number of people are drawn to Gili Trawangan, known as Gili T for short.

Otherwise, you can book a boat trip from Bali to Gili T. A minibus will pick you up from your accommodation in Ubud or Seminyak and take you to Padang Bai harbour. From here, it’s a 1.5 hour boat journey.

If you have a return ticket, be sure to keep all parts of your tickets and make a note of the boat company named on it. Visit the company’s ticket office at least two days before you depart Gili T, to make sure you have a seat on your preferred date, as they get booked up quickly.

The best time to visit Gili Trawangan

Gili Trawangan has a tropical climate with warm and humid weather year-round, but the amount of rainfall changes noticeably between seasons. The best times to visit Gili Trawangan are in April-May or September-October. I went in April-May and the weather was perfect.

The wet season is from October to April, with the heaviest rainfall from December to February. Daytime temperatures during the wet season usually range from 28°C to 33°C. Christmas and New Year is a more expensive time to visit the island, as this is when many local tourists visit for the holidays.

The dry season is between May and September, which means calmer seas, better water visibility, lower humidity and more pleasant temperatures, averaging 25°C to 30°C. Peak tourist season is from July to September, when European summer holidays bring large crowds.

For fewer tourists and better accommodation prices, the shoulder months are best – April to May or September to October. Weekends are always busier than mid-week, as day-trippers from Bali and Lombok often visit Gili Trawangan on weekends, especially the main beach.

Frequently asked questions about Gili Trawangan

Is it worth going to Gili Trawangan?

Yes, definitely, if you’re looking for somewhere you can relax during the day and enjoy the evenings. The beaches are better than many in Bali and the car-free environment gives this island a uniquely peaceful atmosphere.

Is Gili T still a party island?

Yes, though it’s evolved. While Gili Trawangan still hosts beach parties most nights, the island has also developed a strong yoga and wellness scene. You can easily avoid the party scene by staying on the quieter eastern or northern sides. It’s now mature enough that you can curate whatever experience you want.

What free things can you do in Gili Trawangan?

Walking the entire circumference of the island takes about two hours and costs nothing. Snorkelling from the beach is free if you bring your own equipment, and you can often spot turtles right off the shore near Turtle Point. Watching the sunset from the western beaches is spectacular and completely free.

How many days do you need in Gili Trawangan?

I’d say 3-4 days is the sweet spot. That gives you enough time to try different activities, explore the beaches, and experience both the chill and party sides of the island. Though honestly, the laid-back vibe is so addictive you might end up staying longer.

Is Gili Trawangan good for solo travellers?

Yes, the backpacker scene here is huge and it’s easy to meet people. Hostels are social, beach bars are friendly and activities like snorkelling tours are great for meeting others.

Final thoughts on the best things to do in Gili Trawangan

What I like most about Gili Trawangan is it can be calm or lively, social or quiet — and you don’t have to commit to one version of it. Over a couple of days, you naturally find the rhythm that suits you.

I was surprised by how well different types of travellers coexist here. Backpackers, couples, yoga lovers and partygoers share the island easily, without it losing its character. The lack of cars plays a big part in that. It softens everything – the pace, the noise, even expectations.

Gili Trawangan is small and that’s part of its appeal. A few days here is just right. Long enough to relax into island life and short enough to leave while it’s still fresh.

It’s not somewhere I’d build a whole trip around — but as a short stop on a longer Bali itinerary, it works beautifully.
